Nathan awoke and looked at the blue sky above him scattered with clouds. He sat up and realized he was still holding onto the letter. He read it again.
Dear Mr. Nathan,
We regret to inform you that your "friend" Cade McGill was killed at Pearl Harbor.
Nathan must have passed out after reading the letter. He remembered the first time he met Cade. His friends Billy and Henry went to the local high school with him. In 1941 it was still considered taboo to be gay. Nathan was the only one who knew about Bill and Henry's relationship. Often they would go riding in Billy's car and park by the lake. While Billy and Henry were busy making out in the front seat, Nathan wished he had someone he could make out with too. One day he got his wish. Billy said he knew a guy who wanted to meet him. He told Nathan to meet them at the local soda shop in town in half an hour. Nathan fixed himself up and drove to the soda shop and parked. Butterflies were flittering around in his stomach and his palms were sweaty. He grabbed the door handle and went in.
The smell of soda and ice cream filled Nathan's nostrils as he walked over to the booth Billy and Henry were sitting in. He stopped dead in his tracks. Sitting across from them was the hottest guy Nathan had ever seen. He had short dirty blond hair slicked back, a boyish face and beautiful green eyes. He wore a white t-shirt and jeans. When he saw Nathan staring at him he smiled. "Hello." he said.
Nathan looked at Billy and Henry. "Cade, this is our friend Nathan, Nathan this is Cade McGill." Billy and Henry stood. "We've got some things to take care of so we'll leave you two alone."
They left and Nathan sat down across from Cade. "It was good of you to come." Cade said smiling shyly.
Nathan liked this hot young twink. They talked for a while and then Cade asked him if he wanted to go somewhere more private. Nathan's cock jumped in response. "Sure".
They got into Cade's car and drove to an open field and parked under a huge oak tree. "I'm leaving soon,” Cade said. Nathan was so taken by the beauty of the place that he barely heard what Cade said.
"Leaving, why?"
Cade laughed. "This is a beautiful spot isn’t it?" The sun had begun to set turning the sky colors of red and orange and purple and the clouds looked like cotton candy. Fireflies began blinking their green neon behinds. "I'm going to join the Navy."
Nathan sat there. He couldn’t think of anything to say. "Where, when?"
Cade watched the fire flies dance and blink. "Pearl Harbor, in a few days."
Nathan felt sadness wash over him. The first cute guy he could actually see himself being with and he had to leave. "I'll miss you."
Cade looked at Nathan with a mixture of sadness and lust. He leaned in and their lips met. Nathan closed his eyes and parted his mouth letting Cade slide his tongue in. His lips felt soft and tasted sweet.
"What was that for?" Nathan asked when they finally pulled away.
Cade looked deep into his brown eyes. "No one has ever said something like that to me before." He told Nathan about his older
