Walking through the abandoned baseball field I couldn’t help but think that it had been a long year and I was glad that the end was in plain sight. So many things in my life had changed in my senior year of high school that it only left me with more excitement as to what college would bring in the fall. I had really opened up to the people at my school and found myself getting along with people I had otherwise never spoken to in four years.

That was kind of the story for tonight. Wyllie and I had never really hung out at all in high school. We just ran with completely different crowds. He was the mysterious cute boy in the popular crowd and I was all about my camera and the school dark room. To most people I was known as the kid with the attitude problem and Wyllie well he got along with everyone. He was the class president and the captain of the varsity tennis team. Needless to say we were kind of polar opposites.

So as I arrived at the dugout standing in the utter darkness I couldn’t help but ask myself why the hell I was here. This had to be some kind of joke right? Why would the most popular kid in my school ask me to join him at the baseball field to “hang out”? Okay, I know all signs point to no but something inside of me told me that I had to go. Being the only gay kid in your class in a small town doesn’t always get you a lot of good attention and it often involves you having to prove yourself to other people a lot. But with Wyllie it was different. Sure in front of his friends he kept a good face but even then he was never once rude to me. In fact he was always considerate and always polite. There was just some unspoken connection there that told me he was different from anyone I had ever known. I guess that’s why I decided that I was going to come tonight no matter what common sense told me.

Straining to make sense of my surroundings I sat down on the bench and waited for him to show up. It wasn’t long before I heard footsteps making there way toward the dugout and bracing myself for what was going to come next I noticed that it was only one set of foot steps I heard walking through the freshly mowed grass. That left me feeling a little bit better and a few moments later to my surprise there he was. Being around six foot tall he was slightly taller than I was and he had a naturally slim body, which was toned and tanned from all the sports he was involved in. Even in the dark summer night I could see his brown hair falling slightly into his eyes, which were the most entrancing shade of green. Standing there in the doorway wearing a fresh white t-shirt and a pair of cargo shorts, I couldn’t help but to stare. After a few moments of awkward silence that seemed to go on forever, he finally said hey in the casual way you say hey to a friend you pass on the street. I stood and said hello back and then partly because I didn’t know what else to do and partly because the curiosity was killing me. I asked him very bluntly why he asked me to meet him
