“I’m really sorry about the theatre,” said Ayden. “I should have checked to make sure it was open.”
“Don’t be silly, how were you supposed to know that the power was going to go out?” said Kevin looking over at Ayden and giving him a playful punch on the arm.
They walked side by side down the dark street, a face occasionally illuminated against the flash of headlights or a parsing street lamp.
“So much for our date though, a walk into town and a walk back out. Sounds like the material of a Hollywood movie director,” said Ayden kicking at a stray pebble on the pavement.
“So this was a date?” said Kevin looking up at Ayden again.
“Why don’t you want it to be?” said Ayden looking up at Kevin for the first time since leaving the theatre, concern in his eyes.
“Of course I want it to be, I just wasn’t sure.” He said mumbling the last part.
“Oh my god, are you thick? I’ve been flirting with you for months, almost throwing myself at you at times. And how many guy friends do you have that ask you to go to see the latest romance flick of an evening?” said Ayden incredulously grabbing Kevin’s arm and stopping.
“I’ve done stuff with a guy before. But I’ve never actually been on a date and I wasn’t sure what the normal thing was.”
“I’m such a prick, your first date out and I completely screw it up,” said Ayden bringing his hand to his head and messing his hair up.
“Forget about the bloody picture will you, I didn’t want to see it anyway.”
“You didn’t?” asked Ayden looking at him curiously.
“Okay maybe I did but that’s not the point, I wasn’t planning on paying much attention to it.” Kevin said reaching out and taking Ayden’s hand in his own.
“I thought you said you didn’t think it was a date.”
“No, I was unsure whether it was a date and that doesn’t mean I wasn’t going to try and turn it in to one if it wasn’t.” said Kevin stepping closer to Ayden and closing the space between them.
“Just because this date turned out to be a bit of a flop doesn’t mean there can’t be another one.” Kevin said his gaze fluttering between Ayden’s lips and unfocused eyes.
“Ayden?” Kevin said quietly.
“Huh?” Ayden grinned shaking his head to bring himself back to the present.
“You want to go on another date?” Kevin trailed off.
“Maybe this date doesn’t have to be a flop after all. Look over there.” Ayden said motioning behind Kevin.
Kevin turned around. “Yeah it’s the public pool, but it’s closed at this time of night.”
“Exactly! Closed means no one around, closed means we would be all by ourselves. And besides it’s warm out and we don’t really want to go home do we?” said Ayden focusing back on Kevin.
“Of course I don’t want to go home, but I don’t have anything to swim in.” Kevin said unsurely.
“There’s that bloody dense part of your blonde little brain again, its called skinny dipping babe,” said Ayden tapping Kevin on the head affectionately.
“Now come on.” Ayden said grabbing Kevin’s hand and leading him across the grass.
“I think there’s a hole in the fence around here somewhere,” mumbled Ayden.
“Ah huh! Found it.” Ayden said dropping Kevin’s hand and squeezing through
