RonJon Part I

This is a (mostly) True Story…

My college years were the Wonder Years – mostly, it was a wonder that I survived! The oldsters said about the 1960’s, “…if you remember the ‘60’s, you weren’t really a part of it…” Well, I don’t remember all of my college years…

A bunch of us lived in this really cool house about two blocks from the main campus. It was a huge old place that the owner had divided up into bedrooms, with 3 bathrooms (one on each floor) and a common living room and kitchen. The floor plan was all cut up, with these funny odd corners and little private nooks and crannies. He lived in one bedroom downstairs, and rented out three more bedrooms on that floor, with 5 bedrooms on the second floor. What had been the attic was now finished, and with two big central dormers, made three more bedrooms up there, with a sort of wide hallway into which we put a Trash Day couch (one we picked up off the street on Trash Day), and a small table for study, or – whatever. Several of the bedrooms were only big enough for one, but most of them had two occupants, so we were quite a houseful.

There was a lot of fluidity in the resident, rent-paying population. People moved in, graduated, moved on, dropped out, split up with their roommates, went broke, got busted, got pregnant, whatever. And there were always assorted non-rent-paying, semi-permanent ‘guests’ - one guy slept on the couch in the common living room for six months before the owner figured out that he wasn’t attached to anyone there, he was just hangin’ out. The owner at least had the decency to wait until spring and warm weather came before he threw the guy’s skanky ass out in the street.

I lived in what was, to me at least, the best room in the house – the third-floor front bedroom. It stretched the width of the house, but because it was not in the portion that was made up of the two big dormers, it had a sloped ceiling, with built-in bookcases and drawers all along the side walls. It had a front window, with a great view of the campus and the city, and I could slip out of the window and onto the second-floor porch roof and catch some rays when the weather was nice. It was hot in the summer, but also cozy warm in the winter.

Of the other two bedrooms – which were the big dormers – one was occupied by a succession of tenants during my three years’ there. The other was occupied, for most of that time, by two guys whom everyone in the house came to know as “RonJon”. They were my age, and had moved into the house the fall semester before I arrived there the following January. They were an odd couple – Ron was big, and bluff, and hearty, a happy-go-lucky kind of guy who was not exactly a jock, but he worked out regularly and played football and baseball on some of the pick-up, weekend scrimmage teams. He was about 6’3’’, brownish-blonde hair, big shoulders above a narrow waist, with a sculpted, well-muscled, defined body that showed off the workouts.
