I rapped my a fingers a quick few times against the dark room door. When I didn’t hear a response, I twisted the handle to find the door unlocked. This was shocking, of course. In the dozen or so times I’d been down to the McIver building’s darkroom this semester, this is the first time I hadn’t found it occupied.

Excited that I could forego my usual 30-minute–to-an-hour wait to actually get into and use the room, I snatched the door open and slipped in.

“Shut the door! Shut the door!” I heard an excited voice screeching at me from the darkness at the far end of the room. I quickly obliged, shuffling myself into the corner and slamming the door behind me. I flipped the latch down as I did so.

“Sorry! It wasn’t locked,” I responded, peering through the dim, reddish light to see if I could make out who it was that I had incidentally barged in on.

“Oh, my fault. I must have forgotten to latch it when I came in. Thanks for getting the door shut so quickly. I haven’t exposed anything yet, so I should be fine.” The voice sounded familiar, and after a moment of letting my eyes adjust, I realized it was Ben speaking to me.

“Oh, hey, Ben,” I began. “Do you want me to come back?”

“No, John, it’s okay,” he said as he began dumping developer into his tank. “There’s plenty of room for both of us.”

“Great,” I replied. “I really hope I got something good on this roll. I don’t have anything I feel good about turning in on Friday.”

I had decided to take Photography as an elective at the beginning of the semester, mostly on a whim. I always tried to schedule at least a couple art classes a year, because I really enjoyed dabbling with painting and drawing, but also because I totally had a thing for cute art guys.

When I saw Ben on the first day of class, I was immediately attracted to him. He is the epitome of my type – medium build, pale skin, jet black, angle swept hair, and that great, form-fitted urban style. He also just seemed to carry himself with an air of confidence that the other students didn’t have. And to me, confidence is the second sexiest quality a person can have; talent being the first.

And Ben was talented. So much so that I was envious of his skills. His photographs were always developed perfectly. I don’t even think he knew what the term ‘under-exposed’ meant. And he just had that natural eye for subtext, and guiding sight lines that made his pictures infinitely more interesting to study than everyone else’s. One day Professor Starnes had set up a bowl of fruit and told us all to photograph it. Everyone else in the class, myself included, took a very nice picture of a bowl of fruit.

Then Ben walked up there, grabbed a single apple out of the bowl, handed it to Jayne, one of the better looking females in there, and said, “Hold this.”

He then tugged one thin aquamarine strap of her tank top off her shoulder, got down on one knee and took the most gorgeous, seductive, ‘Eve and the forbidden fruit’ photo I’ve ever seen. That’s just how Ben was. He knew how to step outside of the boundaries that most people confined themselves in.
