I almost always have the story finished long before I can even consider a title. I sometime just have a really difficult time summing up the action in a single phrase...
The unique idea, twist, or hook comes first for me, then the story, with the title usually forming while the story is being written.
I agree with Habu, who has written a lot more and a lot better stories than I ever will - something about the situation has to be unique enough - or emotionally significant enough - to justify the story, which often comes out totally different from the way it began, or the way I first framed it. The title is usually last. (at least for me, that is the case)
I start with a fantasy, something evolving out of a real experience which might be quite innocent. Both of my stories, which I posted last month, start with something which really happened to me, and then fiction takes over to spice it up. Writing for me is an autoerotic experience. Publishing it evokes some of the 'giving' of sex.
The title is difficult: do you go for earthy and descriptive ("Eating nine inches at the truckstop") or something brilliantly suggestive and obscure ("Do the stars cast shadows?")
I suppose it comes down to this: what title will persuade more people to open your story?

I believe, and it usually works out that way, that the story comes first and then the title. I don't think you can create an appropraite and fitting title without having written the story first. _________________ God gave us a penis and a brain, but only enough blood to run one at a time.

Most of the time, Cap'n, I would agree, but every once in a while something comes along - a phrase, a description, something - that I says to my Self, "Self - that would make a helluva title for a story!" And so, I try to build the story around the title, and create a situation to match. For me, it is harder to write that way than starting with the story and then coming up with a 'clever' title.
It depends. It changes sometimes. When I have an idea I write it. When I have a title, I write it then elaborate from their. _________________ "I met my love before I was born. He wanted love. I taste of blood. He bit my lip and drank my war from years before."
I'm New here. I just wrote a story, and then somehow I lost it. For me the story comes first, then I go back and name it. Can someone tell me how to go about posting a story here? Like I said, I wrote one, then went back and named it, and picked a category for it, then I lost it. What did I do wrong? Help if you can. I'm new here. Love the stories I've read already. Would like to post a few of my own.
Thanks for your help
Jeff
Just click on Submit a Story at the top (big blue button to the right when you're logged in), then either upload the file itself, or paste the story into the text box, along with all the rest filled out. It'll take a few days for it to show up, though.

If all else fails, hit the "Contact Us" button and either Philmore or Clarke will come to the rescue...of course, they may also come to your house to extract payment for their services.... _________________ "Lift ev'ry voice and Sing, 'till Earth and Heaven ring..."

Hmm, I got two stories published here and Clarke didn't show up at my house (bring the bondage tape if you do please ) looking to extract anything. Did I miss a step?
The title is usually last, I write poems and typically they just come. Very rarely it's the other way around.
...Like being a top or a bottom - it's fun to explore both sometimes....
I wonder if I could get a Doctorate in English Literature with a dissertation on tracking the correlation between those who write the title first and then the story, or those who write the story first and then the title, as to whethere they are tops or bottoms? That could be a fun committee... _________________ "Lift ev'ry voice and Sing, 'till Earth and Heaven ring..."

I'd hate to do the research on it but I'd love to hear about the results. _________________ ~Manny
