It might help if you remember trans basically means to cross. You know trans-Atlantic is to go over/cross the Atlantic so trans gender is to cross gender.
transgender : 1. Appearing as, wishing to be considered as, or having undergone surgery to become a member of the opposite sex.
transexual 1. a person who has undergone a sex change operation
2. a person whose sexual identification is entirely with the opposite sex.
Okay, now I get it. See James...you have to draw me a diagram. Keep in mind that I'm as dumb as a box of rocks when it comes to this subject.
warning, dont look at that unless youre prepared for it.
i cant even imagine feeling like i needed that kinda surgery to change myself.
well i always wondered what it looked like after.
now i know. _________________ "I love it when people give up chocolate for lent...OHHH just like being nailed to a cross...hey God, get over here we gotta open up the Pearly Gates, this bitch is going like 40 days without a Kit Kat Bar!"

You talk about meeting "...gays, in person..." as if you'd been to the Zoo and seen some exotic animals there. Believe it or not, Gays are actually people - there are just certain aspects of the totality of their lives that are different.
i did not get the sense that she was talking about us as if we were animals in a zoo or saying that we were not people. i just got that she was sharing an experience she had at a leather bar.

It is an unfortunate aspect of American society at the dawn of the 21st Century, that a gay person's sexual orientation can be (and often is) taken as the sum total of their lives, the dominant aspect of it, no matter what else they may have to offer or to do or to be.
if that was 100% true, then what is the purpose of the pride parades? we are celebrating our sexuality by having them , are we not? wemake it an issue by having them. if we didn't want to make it an aspect of our lives (dominant or otherwise), then we wouldn't make it an issue at all. cases in point: ellen announced it on a sitcom, don amaeche, t.r.knight, lance bass, and that dude from doogie houser announced it to the world via the entertainment mags. there was no need for any of them to come out, but they did. i can understand coming out to your family and friends, but to the entire world? they made it an issue when they did that. they offered us their talent before then turned around and put the gay thing into the equation.
we can't have it both ways. we can't say on one hand: 'we don't want our sexual orientation to be taken as the sum total of our lives' then turn around and celebrate it thus making it an issue. we need to stop talking out the side of our necks.

derogatory names/labels of any kind towards anyone is not cool. i commend her for at least trying to learn. i would rather have her hear it from the horse's mouth, than from some bigot who'd fill her head with negative stereotypical shit. _________________ Keep it real, or just keep it.
everyones different, and yes you can have it both ways. some people choose to go to parades and be proud. while others like myself just go to work everyday.
i dont think id be caught dead at a pride parade, i dont want people to look at me and the first thing they think be AHA HE HAS SEX WITH MEN. i want them to notice me for who i am, not who i fuck. _________________ "I love it when people give up chocolate for lent...OHHH just like being nailed to a cross...hey God, get over here we gotta open up the Pearly Gates, this bitch is going like 40 days without a Kit Kat Bar!"

Thanks Blatino for getting what I was saying earlier on in this thread. Good looking out.
WillYum, you stated that you can have it both ways. But how? You made an excellent point, but I just can't see how it can work both ways.
You don't go to the parades b/c you want to be known for who you are and not who you sleep with. I totally get your reasons behind that.
And I also feel what Blatino's saying. I never thought about it in that way, but now that it has been brought up, I would like to know the answers to that myself. I also want to know why are the celebrities so keen on coming out publicly. What is their purpose, exactly?
I'm not knocking them for coming out, just curious as to their motivation for doing so.
Hell, I don't see anything wrong with a gay pride parade. It looks like a lot of fun. I've never gone to the one here, but I should have. I think that I will definetely go to the other one that's to be held in September.
***I think that we all should be found guilty of jacking this thread****
It's sort of forced on people to have pride parades. Like every equal rights movement or pride thingy-ma-jigger. There have been times where it's been made blatantly clear to me that I am viewed in a specific way or on the receiving end of actions (from grades to stares to whistles) just because of my gender. The fact is, until people stop asking what sexual orientation someone is, it will be an issue and a point of interest and it will affect their lives. I think that's why pride parades and various movements have come about, it's not the group drawing attention to what they are per se, it's the group saying they aren't ashamed for being what they are even if society feels the need to behave in a prejudicial manner. And I mean prejudice in a broad way not just the really bad negative way.
I'll have to look at the pictures later, thank you in advance for the link James, and for the warning Will. _________________ ~Manny
