Sometimes I think adding the condom wrecks the flow of the story. Other times it might enhance it.

But what it comes down to is that everyone would prefer to fuck sans a condom if at all possible.

Sometimes the tension is the best part, in cheap Harlequin novels I've read I've been left complaining due the sex scene being so ridiculously short. Who wants to read 200+ pages of a sex novel for less than a paragraph of actual sex anyways? The tension and desire two characters can have between each other is so much hotter than the actual sex sometimes

Softcore would work, I think. Hell, it's what they label porn with no visible penetration. (And believe me, I had some HOT softcore vid clips...lots of rubbing and kissing, without the actual fucking.)
