The army says they won't allow homosexuals in the military because it (quote)"would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability".
Alright, I guess I sort of understand the "unit cohesion" part, since some percentage of the straight public is still offended by homosexuality and it could create tension and conflict between soldiers (but I mean it's not the 19th century anymore - the only way to change narrow-minded social opinion is to make something normal.)
But what is the deal with the "high standards of morale" and "good order and discipline"? Since when has homosexuality been classified as immoral?
I'm Catholic so I'm already kinda irritated but I was watching something about this on the news and I usually don't bother with politics or social issues but this suddenly annoyed me. What do you think? (And sorry, I don't like bringing up serious discussions too much but I needed to vent hah.)

I feel like people are scared of homosexuals, like we a diesease to be caught. I think they stereotype us as being different therefore, we shouldn't be allowed to do some things. And I would think that gay men that jion the army would want to serve their country as opposed to being "immoral" and doing things they shouldn't be doing. It's dicrimination and it's wrong.

Well, you know... better a rapist and a murderer in the military than a homo. o.O
Jeeeesssusss, convicted felons are apparently not a threat to honor and disipline but gays are. Give me a break. _________________ ~James

I am retired from the U.S.Army. There were always gays in the military. During my 25 years I knew many gays. for the most part the fact that they were gay was largely ignored as long as they did their job and didn't appear overly feminine. For many many years nothing was said concerning gays. This is just something that has popped up since the Christian right rose its ugly head.

I am a Viet Nam veteran. While in Viet Nam I sucked a lot of army cock, including the Chaplain's assistant. Some even reciprocated. Of course, in view of your subject, good things about gay people are rarely publicized. Year after year I grow more disgusted with being treated as a second class citizen by my own country. I resent being a war ("conflict" in Viet Nam's case) veteran and not having the same rights as every other American. I don't believe in war and I was forced to go there or to Canada. I hadn't been to New York City yet, so I took the chance and went with the army. Believe me, those of you who have not been there, it's like Boy Scouts with real bullets! I found the majority of American soldiers all the way from basic training to three years later when Nixon let us out a month early to be sweet, fun and caring for their best buds. They didn't judge me, and those who were keen enough figured out what I wanted and generally gave it to me rather than go into town and catch the clap from a skanky whore. Sorry to go on so long, but I am not happy with the narrow-mindedness of Americans these days and I resent every penny of tax dollars I have had taken from me through pay deductions because those dollars do not represent me and my kind. I don't like paying for breeders' children to go to school or for non-tax-paying hypocrites who run the various religions to hate us. I would give anything if we could all get together and find an attorney who's willing and sue the federal and state governments for all the tax dollars they have taken from us only to give us grief in return. We are Americans and entitled to the pursuit of happiness and if we don't like pissy, well that's just tough, isn't it? I love America but the ignorance is enough to make me want to leave. _________________ S D Frenchie
